Call for abstracts – International Friction Welding Conference (IFWC)
We are delighted to invite abstract submissions for the International Friction Welding Conference (IFWC) – a newly established event combining two leading symposia: the 14th International Symposium on Friction Welding and the 6th International Symposium on Linear Friction Welding. This joint format provides a unique international forum for professionals from academia and industry to share and develop scientific and technical knowledge across all friction processes.
The event will take place on-site at TWI Ltd in Cambridge, UK, featuring three days of technical presentations, poster sessions, and informal opportunities for knowledge exchange and networking. Participants will also enjoy a social event at the iconic Imperial War Museum, Duxford—offering a memorable setting to connect with peers from across the friction welding community.
We invite papers in relation to all friction processes, including but not limited to:
- Friction Stir Welding (FSW)
- Rotary Friction Welding (RFW)
- Linear Friction Welding (LFW)
- Friction Stir Processing (FSP)
- Friction Stir Channelling (FSC)
- Friction Stir Additive
Submissions should present new developments in science, technology, applications, industrialisation, performance, quality, design, or any topic relevant to the advancement of friction welding and processing. Examples of sub-topics are as follows:
- Microstructural and Mechanical Properties
- Numerical Modelling and Simulation
- Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection
- Industrial Applications and Case Studies
- Joint Design, Performance, and Qualification
Submission Guidelines
Abstracts should be approximately 300 words long and must include:
- Full title of the paper
- Names, affiliations, email addresses, and full mailing addresses of all authors
- Preferred presentation format (Oral or Poster)
- Clearly identified presenting author
Abstracts must provide a clear overview of the background, objectives, methodology, and key results of the work. The official language of the conference is English.
Each presenting author may submit up to three abstracts.
The deadline for abstract submission is 28th November 2025.
Notification of acceptance will be communicated by 16th January 2026.
Full papers will be required by 24th April 2026.
Please note the paper will be free-to-access in May 2027 through TWI’s Digital Library.
All submissions will undergo peer review. The main criteria for acceptance are:
- Clear evidence of progress in an aspect of friction welding
- Relevance to industrial or academic challenges
- Largely unpublished content
Authors of accepted papers will be expected to attend the event and present their work in person. A visa support letter can be provided upon request to assist with international travel planning.
We also welcome innovative ideas for how research and developments can be presented and discussed, including workshops, panels, or demonstrations. If you have suggestions, please contact the conference organiser, Rosie Mellor (rosie.mellor@twi.co.uk).
Who should Submit?
We welcome submissions from researchers, industry practitioners, engineers, graduate students, and equipment developers. Whether cutting-edge research or real-world experience, your contribution is valued.
